ST. GABRIEL ATHLETIC ASSOCIATION

BASKETBALL
Basketball has the power to inspire, connect, and build confidence - and every child deserves a chance to play. Whether your child is brand new to the game or already loves to dribble and shoot, our program creates a welcoming space to grow, learn, and have fun.
From basic skills to team play, kids will be coached by experienced mentors who are passionate about the game. No matter their starting point, every participant will get the opportunity to improve, make friends, and enjoy the excitement of basketball in a positive, uplifting environment.
Program Details
Basketball is available for girls and boys starting in 3rd through 8th grade. It is a winter sport, typically starting in early November.
Grades 3-4
WHAT TO EXPECT
In grades 3-4, the focus is on learning the basics of basketball. Kids will work on dribbling, passing, shooting, defense, and understanding how the game is played. Teamwork and good sportsmanship is also a cornerstone of learning the game.
PRACTICES
Practices start in mid to late November and take place Monday–Friday between 4:00–9:30 PM at St. Gabriel, St. Raphael, and Busch School. The basketball director schedules practice times with input from head coaches. Each team practices once a week for 60–75 minutes. Balls are provided at St. Gabriel; players should bring their own to Busch or St. Raphael. Practice times may not always accommodate club sports or other activities.
GAMES & SEASON DETAILS
CYC basketball games are two 20-minute halves. The league schedules vary, but teams can expect to play 9 games during the 10-week season. League games typically start in early January and run thru early March.

Grades 5-8
WHAT TO EXPECT
In grades 5-8, players will continue building their basketball skills with more focus on game play and teamwork. They'll work on improving dribbling under pressure, stronger passes, shooting form, defensive strategies, and learning offensive plays. Players will also develop a better understanding of game rules, positions, and how to work together on the court. Sportsmanship and effort are always emphasized.

Misc. Information
All teams are required to cover a shift at the concession stand during the season. Specific dates and assignments will be coordinated by the basketball director.
St. Gabriel also hosts 7th grade boys and girls basketball tournaments each year—the Bernie Leonard Girls Tournament (typically the last week of January) and the Herb Hartmann Boys Tournament (usually the 1st or 2nd week of February). During these events, 7th grade parents are responsible for staffing the concession stand and admission table.
